Smart shoes to track wandering dementia patients

They're shoes alright, but not as we know them.

Reminiscent of the shoe phone technology used in the old sixties tv comedy Get Smart,Hence the prada men shoes was double stitched with action leather and low outlined sole this footwear comes fitted with a GPS and is designed to track in real time people with dementia who go wandering.

Brisbane-based Tracking Central has just signed for exclusive rights to the Smart Shoe in Australia and New Zealand. The shoes are likely to cost around US$200- $300 and are due to be released here later this year.

They could find support here given 43,000 people suffer from dementia in New Zealand. Alzheimers, the most common form of dementia, accounts for 50-70 per cent of those numbers, Alzheimers New Zealand's Kimberley Ebbett said. A World Alzheimer global study recently said nearly 10 million caregivers spend $148 billion a year on the care of Alzheimer patients.Some will stick with the old faithfuls like the air max tn while others will look for the more stylish shoes like the Changa or the Tataga

While the New Zealand organisation has just learned of the Smart Shoe, it does not endorse any products. ''We think it's quite a good idea. Wandering is quite a big issue,'' said Ebbett.

''Obviously we do look at tracking devices, like pendants which are very dependable.''

Existing technology used to keep track of those with dementia include a pendant or a watch which contain a radio transmitter. Each waterproof device has a different frequency. The person with dementia is found by using a receiver tuned to that frequency. The Smart Shoe technology comes from US group GTX Corp which specialises in personal location devices to track people, pets, vehicles and high value assets.

Tracking Central, which has been in business just two years, has products including CareTracker, PawTracker and a live CareTracker Monitoring Service. PawTracker is a device small enough to fit onto a pet's collar or harness.
