Filling Nordstrom's shoes

Before there was Circle Centre mall, there were the holes.

Large and ugly excavations of the Downtown lots where the mall was expected to one day rise, the holes became the object of public ridicule and civic concern after financing for the development suffered a lengthy delay. Finally, work on the mall began in 1991 and "Hudnut's holes,'' named after former Mayor William Hudnut who championed the mall, gave way to a project that would become a vital component of Downtown's remarkable revitalization.

But now Nordstrom, one of the mall's initial tenants when it opened in 1995, and one of its two current anchors, plans to close for business in July. Its departure will create a hole of another kind in Downtown Indy.

How long that hole will remain unfilled and whether the loss of Nordstrom will sink other Downtown businesses if a replacement can't be found soon are open questions.
