Nautical-inspired style remains a classic

Sailing-inspired trends may be embraced by designers such as Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, but serious sailors know the sport can be quite unfashionable.

A pair of ratty jeans shorts and a torn vintage T-shirt are often considered acceptable attire.

Not the image you'd expect, right?

McConnico, who has been part of the Houston Yacht Club for seven years, says sailing gear is about function more than fashion. She typically sails wearing Harken sailing shoes, sturdy gloves to prevent rope burn, a sun visor and Lands' End Rash Guards shirts.

Yet nautical looks are as much a part of summer as linen pants and sundresses. Think bold stripes of red, white or blue, boat shoes, brightly-colored shorts, rope bracelets and Polo shirts.

On weekends after sailing, McConnico may pull out one of her striped sailing club shirts, an Hermè s scarf worn as a halter, red shorts or even a Houston Yacht Club Polo.

Toby Kamps, curator of modern and contemporary art at The Menil Collection and a skilled sailor, said brick-red pants and horizontal stripes will never go out style. He said much of today's nautical trend takes influences from designers such as Lilly Pulitzer and surfer wear. One of his favorite sail-wear brands is the Italian-based SLAM.

"The nautical look is very American, and people are looking for roots," he said. "It's one of the few times you can pop your collar without looking like a jerk."
